Success Begins With Sight

Myopia is a growing concern for children around the world, and it’s on the rise in the United States. More than 40% of Americans currently have myopia, and more children are diagnosed daily.

Also known as nearsightedness, myopia makes objects in the distance appear blurry while close-up items remain in focus.

Children’s eye exams are essential—roughly 75% of children with myopia received a diagnosis before the age of 12. Catching the condition early on can help us control it, setting your child up for success in the future.

There is no cure for myopia, but we can slow its progression and make things a little easier for your child. Book their appointment to test for myopia today!

Why Controlling Myopia Matters

Proper eyesight is important for learning. Children might struggle to see in school or have a difficult time reading and writing due to poor vision. They may also be slow to develop social behaviors and could be misdiagnosed with behavioral problems.

Language and speech development can also be impacted by myopia. Children learn to speak by watching facial expressions and seeing lips move, so their sight is a key component.

Severe myopia can also lead to more serious conditions later on. The risk of retinal detachment, cataracts, and open-angle glaucoma increases in people with high myopia.

Corrective lenses are needed to correct vision among people with myopia. But, early identification of myopia can help control the condition and slow its progression.

Causes of Myopia

Myopia is a refractive error that develops during childhood and throughout the teenage years. Vision usually stabilizes around age 20.

Normally, light enters the eye and gets focused on the retina, traveling through the optic nerve and to the brain, which interprets the signals. People with myopia have either an eyeball that is too long or a cornea that is too curved, causing light to focus improperly on the retina and making far objects appear blurry.

There is no definitive answer as to the causes of myopia, but it can be hereditary. Also, too much time inside focused on close-up work or using screens is also thought to cause the progression of myopia.

We recommend that parents encourage children to spend time outdoors. Studies suggest that time spent outdoors may reduce the risk of developing nearsightedness.

Our Myopia Control Methods

Stellest Lenses

Stellest lenses from Essilor are a spectacle lens option designed specifically to slow the progression of myopia in children while still providing clear, comfortable vision for school, play, and daily life.

Using innovative technology, these lenses create a gentle myopic defocus signal that encourages healthier eye growth and helps reduce the progression of nearsightedness.

Clinical studies show Stellest lenses can slow myopia progression by about 67% on average when worn throughout the day compared to traditional single vision lenses, making them a strong choice for early myopia management.

MiSight 1 day contact lenses are soft lenses designed to be worn daily and can help children who develop myopia at a young age by slowing down its progression and reducing the risk of severe complications later in life.

Unlike traditional contact lenses, which simply correct vision, MiSight lenses work by altering how light enters the eye. This process helps to slow down the elongation of the eye and prevent the progression of myopia. The lenses contain a “dual-focus” design, providing clear vision for distant and near objects.

Studies have shown that MiSight lenses slow the progression of myopia by an average of 59%.

Myopia Management FAQs

Myopia is a growing concern for children around the world, and it’s on the rise in the United States, where more than 40% of Americans currently have myopia. Roughly 75% of children with myopia receive a diagnosis before the age of 12, and experts predict nearly half of the world’s population will have some degree of myopia by 2050.
Myopia typically doesn’t improve with age — in fact, it often worsens during childhood and adolescence. There is no cure for myopia, but its progression can be slowed. Early identification allows us to help control the condition and protect your child’s future vision, which is why children’s eye exams are so important.
Myopia is a refractive error that develops when the eye grows too long or the cornea becomes too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina and making distant objects appear blurry. Several factors contribute to it. Genetics plays a significant role — if one parent is myopic, their child has a higher chance of developing the condition. Environmental and lifestyle factors matter too, including limited time outdoors and extended periods of near work such as reading, writing, or using digital devices.
Myopia typically develops between the ages of 6 and 14, with the most rapid progression occurring during the school years. The condition rarely improves on its own and usually continues to worsen until the late teens or early 20s.
Myopia control focuses on slowing the progression of nearsightedness rather than simply correcting vision with glasses or contact lenses. Slowing progression can significantly reduce the risk of developing high myopia later in life, which is associated with serious eye complications including retinal detachment and glaucoma. Even a modest reduction in myopia progression can make a difference in long-term eye health outcomes.
We offer a range of evidence-based myopia control options to help slow the progression of myopia in children, including MiSight 1 day contact lenses, multifocal contact lenses, and multifocal or bifocal spectacles. These treatments work by altering how light focuses on the retina, helping to reduce the rate of eye elongation over time. We also offer Synch lenses, which are specially designed to relax the eye’s focusing effort during near tasks like reading or screen use.
MiSight 1 day contact lenses are daily disposable lenses that are FDA-approved for myopia control in children. They work by altering how light focuses on the retina, slowing eye elongation while delivering clear vision throughout the day.
Yes. Spending time outdoors is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of myopia — research suggests children who spend at least 2 hours per day outdoors have lower rates of myopia. It also helps to limit recreational screen time and ensure children take regular breaks from digital devices.
